Ride For Hospiscare

Three members of Hospiscare staff have put their heads together to create a cycling event to raise awareness of the life changing support the charity gives the local community in Exeter, Mid and East Devon. Keen cyclists Shane, Dave and Ian came up with the event ‘Ride for Hospiscare’, which will be taking place on 6th May 2017.

Over lunch in the Hospiscare staff canteen one day, they concocted the plan – to visit each of the Hospiscare shops and day centres in one day and get sponsored for doing so. Ride for Hospiscare is not an official event, but one aimed at keen cyclists who are happy to join in at their own risk for a great day out, while raising money and awareness for Hospiscare.

Dave, Shane and Ian prepare for their challenge

Shane says, “The group will meet at the Okehampton Shop on Saturday 6th May at 7am, and we’ll cycle as a peloton right out to Axminster. We will then work our way back along the Jurassic Coast to Exmouth then up the estuary to Exeter, finishing at Searle House.”

There are 21 Hospiscare Shops and three day centres, and the group hope that the staff, volunteers and communities along the way will cheer their support as they pass. “We’ll be taking a quick photo outside each shop and having refreshment stops at Tiverton, Honiton (Dowell Street), and Sidmouth – it’s going to be a long day!”

Anyone can join Ride For Hospiscare - it’s not an organised event. A number of keen cyclists have already agreed take part and a few Hospiscare staff members mean to join the peloton in Exmouth for moral support, riding the flat section back to Exeter with the group. There will be an accompanying support vehicle, but there will be no first aid team and no insurance cover. What there will be is a fantastic route and great camaraderie while raising money for Hospiscare.

“The aim is to all stay together and it’s not a race,” says Shane, who works in Hospiscare’s Finance Department. “It’s about having fun, achieving a goal, and supporting Hospiscare.

“I get to see first-hand the amazing work that goes on throughout the whole building – work that is all done with our patients and their families at the heart of every decision we make.

“Yes, 115 miles in one day will be really tough but I’m looking forward to every bit of it if it helps raise awareness of the exceptional nursing, bereavement and education services that Hospiscare provides.”
