Spotlight on Stephens Scown LLP

We sat down with the leading southwest-based solicitor firm to discuss our new corporate-charity partnership

Award-winning, employee-owned, leading South West law firm Stephens Scown LLP has announced Hospiscare as one of their charity partners for 2021.

Trainee Solicitor Chris Wells, who sits on the company’s Charity Committee, sat down with us to talk about the firm’s charities programme and why Hospiscare is this year’s charity partner…

Giving back to the community

Chris told us, “As a firm, Stephens Scown has a strong culture of giving back to the community we work in and to the environment. As part of that our staff propose local charities to partner with each year and we take a firm-wide vote on which to support.

“Our firm is always looking for opportunities to give back to the local community. Ultimately, our job is to serve the people of Devon and Cornwall and working with charities and local causes is another way to do this.”

Why was Hospiscare chosen this year?

“Many of our staff members have had touch points with Hospiscare over the years. The charity’s work is so well known in the area and our specialist healthcare team knows the charity from their work in the care sector.

“The initial nomination to support Hospiscare this year came from our Marketing Assistant, Jo. When Jo’s dad was ill 30 years ago, Hospiscare took really good care of him and Jo has supported the hospice ever since.”

How do the charity partnerships work?

“Our Charity Committee will meet to plan a series of activities throughout the year. For example, we’ll invite a Hospiscare team member to one of our “Lunchbox” sessions to talk with staff members about Hospiscare’s work, they’ll undoubtedly be some fun Christmas fundraising planned and we have a lot of keen cyclists on the team so we’re looking forward to getting a team together for Hospiscare’s Tour de Devon cycle challenge in September.”

What would you say to other local businesses who are considering supporting a local charity?

“Absolutely go for it. It increases employee happiness and satisfaction and strengthens our company’s culture and sense of team – and it’s also great fun!”
