Hospiscare Heroes – From dedication celebrations to caring cafés

Our Hospiscare Heroes have been flexing their superpowers to support our charity in an incredible variety of ways

Our Hospiscare Heroes are truly super; week after week, they support our local charity with their fundraising endeavours across Exeter, Mid and East Devon, ensuring we can be there for our patients and their families when they need us most.

From all of us at Hospiscare, we are sending a huge thank you to all of our Hospiscare Heroes. Read on to find out how they have been flexing their superpowers this week.

Firstly, we would like to say thank you to long term supporter of Hopiscare Liz Borner. Last month Liz Borner’s Celebration of Dedication to the Okehampton Friends of Hospiscare was held to honour her contribution. Liz has been a very active Volunteer for Hospiscare since 2004 until 2023.  She first started bolunteering in the Okehampton Shop couple days a week back in 2004 and continued to do so up until the end of 2023.   She was approached by Barry Carpenter and Sarah Smith back in 2004 to see if she would consider meeting up with a view to setting up a fundraising team in Okehampton; to which Liz agreed and was joined by Angela Blezard.  The first main event held in Okehampton in aid of Hospiscare was a Light up a Life Service which was extremely well received.   In 2009 Liz was joined by another member of the community Jill Voaden and from this date on the group has been actively raising awareness for Hospiscare and more latterly Hospiscare at Home.

We thank you Liz for all your hard work and dedication, your kindness and incredible support which means such a lot to every here at Hospiscare, our patients, their families and the staff who care for them.

Next, we would like to thank The Toucan Cafe Bistro in Bampton who hosted a talk and meal earlier this month with proceeds going to Hospiscare. Owners John and Steph hosted a lovely meal for those that attended. Sharon Collins, Area Manager for Hospiscare gave a talk on our services.  Thank you to John and Steph, everyone at The Toucan Care and the local community who  kindly attended. The event raised an amazing £160.00 for Hospiscare.
We are so incredibly lucky to have the support of our local community, your dedication and generosity has ensured that Hospiscare has been by the side of patients and their families when they needed it most over the past four decades.

Finally, we must pay a big thank you to the fashion brand Scamp & Dude who donated some of their Superhero Sleep Buddy soft toys to the ward. These Sleep Buddies were designed to help kids with separation anxiety or bereavement. These toys are cuddly comforters and have a pocket on the back to hold a photo of the child’s special person to watch over them, even when they’re apart.  For every Superhero Sleep Buddy sold, the brand donate another to a child who has lost a parent, or who is seriously ill themselves.

Thank you so much for this kind donation. This will make the world of difference to children experiencing a loved one with life-limiting illness. It will help at a time where it matters the most.

Thank you to all our Hospiscare Heroes on behalf of our staff, patients, and their loved ones.
