Matthew is Chief Operating Officer at Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Musgrove Park Hospital, the largest acute hospital in Somerset.
Since 1998 he has worked in the NHS in the South West. He spent over a decade managing medical and surgical services at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, and was part of the management team when it became one of the country’s first Foundation Trusts.
He was involved in the planning of cancer care across Devon and Cornwall, and helped to establish the Peninsula Medical School in Exeter, of which he became an Honorary Fellow, teaching undergraduate medical students about healthcare management.
Prior to joining the NHS he studied at Oxford University, where he was captain of the university cross-country running club and wrote for the Dictionary of National Biography. He lives just outside of Crewkerne with his wife and three young children.
