Variety is the Spice of Life: Rachel's Story

Rachel Moore, 65, lives in Halberton near Tiverton and has been volunteering for Hospiscare for the past two years. Rachel volunteers twice a week in her local Hospiscare shop in Cullompton. Rachel says:

“I really enjoy being in the shop and helping customers with their purchases. Volunteering works both ways; I benefit from volunteering by being part of the community as well as giving something back. I love the atmosphere in our Cullompton shop; we’re like a little family.”

Rachel enjoys the variety that her role offers as a typical day in the shop can entail anything from sorting clothes and pricing items to meeting customers and handling transactions at the till.

Rachel has also had the opportunity to attend dementia training at Searle House, the hospice in Exeter. Rachel explains:

“The training was really interesting and I found out a lot about how dementia can affect people. It was great to have the opportunity to get training on how I can help people in the shop. I’m also going to be doing first aid training through Hospiscare. I hadn’t expected to be able to attend this type of training as a Hospiscare volunteer.”
