“I’m proud to volunteer my time for Hospiscare.” Jack shares how volunteering has boosted his confidence.

Volunteer, Jack (23), was nervous about assisting customers when he started volunteering at the Hospiscare Clearance Shop in Exmouth, so he decided to start by steaming and pricing clothes in the workroom. Since he became a volunteer nearly 3 years ago, Jack has become more self-assured and he now happily processes sales on the till and chats with customers in the shop.

“I saw the sign outside the shop asking for volunteers,” Jack explains. “I thought it would be a good opportunity to get some useful work experience and give me confidence to look for a job. So I decided to give it a try. I enjoy it so much I’m still volunteering almost 3 years later, even though I now have a paid job too.

“I usually volunteer 3 days a week and occasionally help when other volunteers are on holiday. I serve customers on the till, keep the shop tidy and put new stock out. I really enjoy chatting with customers and having fun with other volunteers. I’ve made lots of friends from volunteering in the shop, everyone is really friendly.”

Shop manager Zoe says “Jack has been an amazing help in the shop. I’d be lost without him! It’s been wonderful to see how his confidence has grown and developed.”

“Volunteering has helped me learn new skills,” says Jack. “I’ve gained valuable work experience and a reference to put on my C.V. I’ve learned a lot from volunteering and I get to help a local charity at the same time. Hospiscare does an amazing job for people who are approaching the end of their life and I’m proud to volunteer my time for Hospiscare.

“To anyone thinking about volunteering, I’d say just go for it. Volunteering can have lots of benefits and you get to support a worthwhile cause. You’ve got nothing to lose!”
