Our Hospiscare choir hopes to celebrate their fifth anniversary year with an ambitious fundraising target.

Hospiscare Choir, a group formed of local people who share a passion for music and supporting our ocal hospice charity, have planned a string of events to celebrate their fifth anniversary. The choir have raised and donated £8,000 to date and hope to finish their fifth year by raising a total of £10,000.

Hospiscare Choir has been extremely active in the community since its formation. The choir has sung at the Crediton Light Up A Life service every year and regularly works with Exeter Friends of Hospiscare to support their bucket collections on the High Street and at Exeter Guildhall.

In 2017, Hospiscare Choir joined a handful of other hospice choirs to create a CD with Choirs with Purpose that reached the Top 40 of the Official UK chart at Christmas time.

A further highlight for the choir was Hospeacecare; a poem written by young supporter Josie, whose grandad was cared for by Hospiscare, was put to music by the choir’s Musical Director, Alfie Pugh. This special song was shared with the public at Exeter Cathedral as part of Exeter’s Light Up A Life service.

Many of the members of the choir share a personal connection with the hospice, which cares for patients with terminal illnesses and their families across the heart of Devon. Liz Gibbons, Chair of Hospiscare Choir, explains the impact the choir has had on her life, saying:

“I joined the choir about 6 months after it had started in 2015 when I was working as Director of Nursing at Hospiscare. I loved leaving work and singing (and laughing!) with the choir before heading home.

“Singing in the choir gave me new friends and helped me feel deeply connected with a bigger range of Hospiscare supporters and staff. I’m incredibly proud of how much the choir has achieved in five years.”

The choir, who come together for rehearsals every week at our Exeter hospice, has planned a series of events to celebrate their fifth anniversary year and reach their £10,000 fundraising target.

On 4 April from 10:30-12:30, the choir will perform at a special coffee morning at Searle House, our Exeter hospice. A further coffee morning performance will take place at Kings House, our Mid Devon Hospice, from 10:30-12:30 on 9 May.

Hospiscare Community Fundraiser, Susie Healey, commented:

“Hospiscare is so lucky to have the amazing support of the choir; it really adds a special atmosphere to an event when the choir can be there. It’s incredible how much they have raised for our patients already and we really look forward to working with the choir again this year as they aim to raise £10,000 in their fifth anniversary year.”

Everyone is welcome to attend the coffee mornings to enjoy a selection of Hospiscare Choir’s favourite tunes, and of course to enjoy a cuppa and a treat. All donations will be extremely welcome to help the choir reach its £10,000 anniversary target for the hospice charity, which receives just 15% of its funding from the NHS.
