Have yourself a Second Hand Christmas!

Did you know that last year in the UK we spent around £19 billion on Christmas gifts and a staggering £42 million of unwanted Christmas presents went to landfill?1

Shopping second hand is more sustainable both environmentally and economically, and it can help to counteract the current ‘throw-away’ consumer culture that is so damaging to the environment. But there are lots of other reasons to have a second hand Christmas:

Find one-of-a-kind items

Charity shops are filled with some wonderfully unique treasures. Instead of buying a pricy gift from large chain stores, give your loved ones the perfect present from your local Hospiscare shop. Our shops have antiques, books, toiletry set, clothes, accessories, homewares, electrical items and much more!

Prolong usage of items

Shopping second-hand increases the life of an item by extending its usage which is a lot better for the environment.

Save money

Second-hand shopping can also help you save money – or help your budget stretch a little further. There’s often a lot of bargains to be found in your local Hospiscare shop.

Support your local hospice

The money raised from all purchases in our shops helps to raise vital funds for local patients and their families. So you can feel good that your Christmas shopping is also helping to provide care in your local community.

How to have a Second Hand Christmas?

It may seem a bit daunting trying to buy all your presents second hand but there a few small changes you can make to be more sustainable this Christmas.

Start small

Stocking fillers and other small presents are a great way to start. Our shops have a great selection of books, candles, DVDs and vintage items. Have a read at our gift guide for some inspiration.

Buy your Christmas party outfit second hand

In 2018, fashion shoppers spent over £3.5 billion on Christmas party clothes - but around 8 million of those sparkly items went to landfill after being worn only once.2 Buying your glitzy Christmas clothes in a Hospiscare shop not only saves money but it helps the environment too. And if you’re not going to wear the item again why not donate it back for someone else to enjoy?

You’ve probably been given at least one present that you don’t really like or use – so give someone else the chance to enjoy it buy re-gifting to a friend. Or donate it to your local Hospiscare shop to help raise money.

Shop online

Check out the Hospiscare eBay shop to browse over 200 specially selected ornaments, cameras, jewellery, and antiques. The Hospiscare Amazon store has a range of vinyl, books, CDs and DVDs, video games and board games. If you’re doing your shopping on Amazon don’t forget to select Hospiscare as your charity on Amazon smile!

Get creative

Make your own Christmas crackers from cardboard tubes and recyclable paper and hide a small second-hand surprise in the centre. Decorate some brown paper with stamps to make your own recyclable wrapping paper or use fabric offcuts to wrap your presents.
