With the festive season just around the corner, the little elves at Hospiscare thought they would put together a guide on how you can support your local hospice this Christmas.
Environmental awareness is at the forefront of many people’s minds throughout the year and why should this be any different at Christmas? Rather than buying a new product, you could have a second hand Christmas and buy pre-loved, good quality presents from our Hospiscare shops.
Having a second hand Christmas is not only great for the environment, it’s also great for your wallet. Our shops are jam-packed with bargains at what can otherwise be a very expensive time of year. The average Christmas spend per household in 2017 was around £500 for presents, decorations and food. We only accept high quality donations so there is no need to compromise on the quality of your purchases.
If finding your entire Christmas list at our charity shops seems a daunting task, why not start small with second hand stockings or a second hand Secret Santa?
We have twenty shops across Exeter, Mid and East Devon as well as a dedicated Amazon and eBay store where you can find vintage items and unusual gifts, as well as DVDs, CDs and clothing. For a full list of our shops, click here. You can view our shops’ Christmas opening hours here.
For all you online Christmas shoppers, did you know that you can buy your gifts through Amazon Smile? You’ll find the same shopping experience and the same gifts as your normal Amazon page but with the added bonus that 0.5% of the net purchase of your item will go to a charitable organisation of your choice. Click here to set up your Amazon Smile for Hospiscare.
It won’t be long before your Head of Christmas Cheer puts everybody’s names in a hat ready for you to draw out your office Secret Santa recipient. Why not change it up a little this year with a Good Cause Santa Claus? Challenge your colleagues to purchase their Secret Santa presents from charity shops; not only will this help you keep to your Secret Santa spending limit, you’ll also get that warm Christmassy glow from knowing that you and your colleagues have contributed to a good cause. To find out how you can be a Good Cause Santa Claus for Hospiscare, click here.
Support Hospiscare this Christmas by buying a pack of our beautifully designed Christmas cards. From traditional snowy scenes to more modern cut-out designs, these packs of ten start at just £2.95 and are available to buy in our Hospiscare shops as well as on our eBay site.
Creating a Christmas Hamper for Hospiscare is an easy way to fundraise for our charity. Simply find a suitable box (or get one from your nearest Hospiscare shop), fill it with goodies and raffle it by selling the lucky squares that you receive in your registration pack. You can find out more here.
Light Up A Life is an opportunity for your to remember someone you love this Christmas while also supporting your local charity. Come along to one of our Light Up A Life Services or if you would prefer to make an online dedication by having your own virtual star shining in memory, you can do this here.
We are delighted to have been chosen as the official charity partner for this year’s Christmas Light Switch On in Exeter. This means that our fundraisers will be out in full force under the glow of the lights with our buckets so any change you can spare to support our cause this Christmas will be greatly appreciated. The Exeter Christmas Light Switch On will take place over five nights this year and you can find out more here.
Every Christmas, we reach out to our local community by sharing a story from a family that we have supported at Christmas. Our hospice is open every day of the year and that includes Christmas; our care of terminally ill patients and their families does not stop during the festive season and making a donation will be such a meaningful gift for these families in need. Look out for this year’s Christmas Appeal, coming soon to the website.
Not sure what gift to ask for this year? Why not set up a Facebook Fundraiser for Christmas and ask your friends and family to donate the money that they would have spent on a gift to Hospiscare. Find out more here.
After Christmas, you may be left with a few gifts that just ‘aren’t you’ or perhaps a few doubled-up presents from people who know you too well! Hospiscare will gladly accept your unwanted gifts and you will know that even if that gift wasn’t right for you, it will be perfect for someone else.
When twelfth night approaches, you may be wondering what to do with your Christmas tree. Last year, we raised over £5000 from our Christmas Tree Collection initiative and our vans will be out in the city again this January to collect your trees. We will collect your tree and recycle it by chipping it and turning it into compost in exchange for a donation. Look out for more information on 2020’s Christmas Tree Collection initiative on our website and social media.
Thank you for reading this article and thinking of our local charity this Christmas.
