Axminster launches new Hospiscare@Home service thanks to funding by the local League of Friends

Axminster Guildhall saw 90 people from across the community gather to celebrate the launch of the Axminster Hospiscare@Home service, funded by the League of Friends of Axminster Hospital on Thursday 21st March.

Guests were welcomed by a cream tea prepared by volunteers from the League of Friends of Axminster Hospital, followed by speeches explaining the new service.

Axminster Hospiscare@HomeMary Ashby (Hospiscare@Home Team Leader), Ann Rhys (Hospiscare Assistant Director of Care), Geoff Pringle (Hospiscare Chair of Trustees), Dr Phil Taylor and Dr Mark Welland.

Dr Phil Taylor Chair of the League of Friends of Axminster Hospital and local GP for 29 years, kicked off the evening explaining the moment he saw the real need for increasing end of life care in people’s homes.  Without the local hospital beds, he was seeing patients taken to Exeter, who desperately wanted to be at, or close to home, whose families were struggling to visit them.  Ann Rhys and Mary Ashby from Hospiscare, spoke about the impact of the services and the honour of supporting patients and families at one of the most vulnerable times of their lives.  And Dr Mark Welland, Chair of the Seaton & District Hospital League of Friends spoke about how the Hospiscare@Home team, already established in Seaton thanks to funding from the League, has had a huge impact on their community and what a privilege it is to work alongside the Hospiscare@Home nursing team.  Where Hospiscare@Home has been put into place, it helps over 90% of its patients die at home, saving 88% of them unnecessary and distressing trips to hospital.

The Axminster Hospiscare@Home Service sits alongside the allied Seaton Hospiscare@Home Service, with the two Leagues of Friends respectively providing the funds for the service in their own town.

These local charities work together ensuring the best use of the money you donate. To donate to The League of Friends of Axminster Hospital email; to donate to Seaton & District Hospital League of Friends visit to donate to Hospiscare visit
