With summer on the horizon and the sun at last beginning to shine, many people’s thoughts will be turning to gardens and gardening. So what better time than now to get hold of a copy of the Hospiscare Open Gardens booklet and plan some visits to beautiful local gardens?
The summer-long Hospiscare Open Gardens event begins on the bank holiday weekend, 5-6 May, at Holcombe Court, near Tiverton. For the third year running, these stunning, but rarely open, private gardens will be welcoming visitors in support of Hospiscare.
As well as country house gardens there are those belonging to urban semis, and every type in between – in fact, something for every garden enthusiast: formal landscaped spaces and informal gardens, hidden gardens and others with breath-taking views, as well as shady woodland and hillside gardens. Refreshments will be available at many of the gardens, and some will provide games and competitions. Jazz lovers should make a note to visit Topsham in August for Jazz in the Garden.
The highlight of this year’s Open Gardens event comes in July, when renowned gardening writer and broadcaster Anne Swithinbank visits Holcombe Court to hold a talk and Q&A session. This will follow a light lunch and the afternoon will finish with a tour of the magnificent gardens, led by Head Gardener Kathy.
Event organiser Susie Healey said: “We’re very excited that Anne Swithinbank is supporting our Open Gardens scheme this year. The Holcombe Court event in July promises to be a real treat for everyone who loves gardens, whether they are keen, green-fingered types or not.”
Admission to the event, on Saturday, 28 July, is by ticket only and booking is essential. Tickets, £20 per person, are available now from Hospiscare on 01392 688020 or click on the button below:
Susie added: “We really appreciate the time and effort that so many people put into their gardens on our behalf. They’re beautiful places to visit, so what better way to support us? The funds raised will go direct to Hospiscare, enabling us to continue to provide the outstanding care for patients with terminal illnesses that we are known for.
“Do make sure you get hold of a copy of our Open Gardens booklet for details of all the gardens that are going to be open over the summer months.
“Bernaville Nurseries are once again kindly sponsoring the booklet, and you can pick up a copy from them – they’re on the A377 about half a mile from the Cowley Bridge roundabout. Copies are also available at any of our Hospiscare shops, local garden centres and tourist information offices or by calling 01392 688020.”
Hospiscare provides outstanding specialist care for adults with terminal illnesses, and support for their carers and families in Exeter, Mid and East Devon. A gift to Hospiscare in your Will helps to ensure the future of the charity for generations to come.
