The Twilight Walk
4th Jul 2020

Can I register on the day?

Yes. Registration before the day (online or call into the fundraising office) will close on Wednesday 1 July 2020, however, you will be able to sign up on the day within the Event Area. Please note that the entry fee 'on the day' will be £30 each.

Can I get food and drink at the event?

There will be water stations available to fill your own bottle before you set off. Once the walk is completed there will be a range of vendors in the event arena offering a varied selection of food and drinks (including a gin bar). Also within the event area prior to setting off there will be hot beverages sold, plus an ice-cream van; both will be donating a percentage of their takings to Hospiscare.

What is the route of the walk?

Maps and written instructions will be provided on the day, the route will be well sign-posted and marshals in key locations.

6.5 mile route:

Our walkers will exit Queen’s Drive Space, turn right and walk along the sea front. Around the marina & through the Imperial Recreation ground, past the Exmouth Rugby Club, along Marine Way, through Carter Avenue Park before taking a left onto Mudbank Lane until you reach the Exe estuary cycle path. Follow along until you reach the National Trust footpath which will take you onto Exeter Road. Turn right and walk until you reach the public footpath (right before the Shell garage) which takes you onto Halsdon Avenue. Follow this road until it becomes Southern Rd, Exmouth Town Football Club and re-joins Marine Way. Walk down Marine way until you get to the subway which will take you under the road and over towards the Strand. Go through the Strand and into Manor Gardens where you will take a left cross at the Zebra crossing and make your way back to the seafront by following the walking paths that go behind the Premiere Inn and head back to Queens Drive Space via the seafront.

13.1 mile route

Our walkers will exit Queens Drive Space through the Maer, up Foxholes Hill, where they join the SW coastal path taking them down the zig zag path, all the way along the sea front. Around the marina & through the Imperial Recreation ground, past the Exmouth Rugby Club, down along Marine Way, through Carter Avenue Park before taking a left onto Mudbank Lane until you reach the Exe estuary cycle path.  Follow the path down through Lympstone all the way until you reach the Puffing Billy in Exton.

Walkers will then head back along the picturesque cycle path as the sun is going down, through Lympstone until you reach the National Trust footpath. Follow the footpath until you reach Exeter Road, take a right and walk until you reach the public footpath (right before the Shell garage) which takes you onto Halsdon Avenue. Follow this road until it becomes Southern Rd, Exmouth Town Football Club and re-joins Marine Way. Walk down Marine way until you get to the subway which will take you under the road and over towards the Strand. Go through the Strand and into Manor Gardens where you will take a left cross at the Zebra crossing and make your way back to the seafront by following the walking paths that go behind the Premier Inn and head back to Queens Drive Space via the seafront.

What is the terrain like for the Twilight Walk?

Relatively flat, the hardest part is Foxholes Hill which only features at the start of the 13.1 mile route. When walking along the cycle path, walkers will need to be aware of other walkers and cyclers, walking in single file wherever required.

How long will the walk take?

At an average pace of 20 minutes per mile the walk should take just over 2 hours for the 6.5 miles and somewhere between 4 and 4 and a half hours for the 13.1 mile route. Walkers from both routes should be back between 9:30-10pm to enjoy some food, drink and music on the Exmouth seafront.

What happens if I cannot finish the walk?

If you cannot finish the walk and feel you might need to stop, you may pull out at any point. Please tell your nearest volunteer marshal who will be able to assist you. If you need to pull out please notify us so that we know that you are safe.

Will it be safe?

Your safety is of the utmost importance to us. As the sun will be going down on your way back to the event arena make sure you bring a flash light!  We do ask that you also bring your mobile phone if you have one, and that it is switched on, fully charged and with plenty of credit on it. The route will be marshalled and signed.

Will there be first aid facilities?

We will have first aiders available at Queen’s Drive Space and out on both routes of the walk.

Will there be toilets on the route?

Toilet facilities will be available at Queen’s Drive Space, Manor Gardens, at the Imperial Recreational Ground exit and The Puffing Billy.

What should I wear?

We recommend that you wear comfortable trainers! Blisters are not fun for anyone. Please make sure that whatever footwear you decide to walk in are well-worn in.

You will receive your t-shirt before the event. Comfortable bottoms to walk in are also important; shorts, leggings or trousers. Whatever you prefer.

Can we walk as a group?

Do I need to raise a certain amount of money?

Your entry fee covers the cost of the event. Therefore any funds you can raise or donate over and above your entry fee is greatly appreciated. If you would rather make a donation instead of raising sponsorship, there is an option to donate upon registering or you can call the team (01392 688020) and donate at any time!

Your information pack will include a sponsorship form and we would encourage everyone to set up a JustGiving online page where all the money you raise will come directly to Hospiscare.

How old do I need to be?

The Twilight Walk is open to entrants aged 12 and over. An adult guardian must accompany each entrant aged under 16 for the duration of the walk and we must have a signed parental consent form filled in by each under 16's legal parent or guardian.

For school and youth groups there must be a ratio of two adults per five pupils. The guardian must sign the registration form in the space provided and enter separately for the Twilight Walk. The registration forms must then be submitted together and the full entry fee is applicable for all entrants.
