Get ready for the Hospiscare Coffee Morning!
Posted on August 14th 2018

Hospiscare’s annual Coffee Morning event is about to get under way.

Throughout the area, people are signing up to raise funds for the local charity by holding coffee mornings in their homes, community halls and even their local parks. Businesses, too, are getting ready to brew up for Hospiscare.

Popular local celebrity Judi Spiers and her faithful companion Gus Honeybun, will once again be joining in the fun and popping in to visit coffee mornings during the event, which runs throughout September.

Last September, Hospiscare supporters held more than 100 coffee mornings, together raising over £22,000. The charity is hoping to beat that target this year and, to encourage people to sign up and raise funds, there are two fantastic draw prizes of afternoon tea for two people on offer.

Anyone who registers by 20th August could find themselves taking tea at the luxurious Bovey Castle Hotel in the heart of Dartmoor, while those who raise £350 or more could be enjoying their tea in the elegant surroundings of Deer Park Country House Hotel near Honiton.

Event organiser, Lianne Harding, said: “Above all, we want people to enjoy themselves while they raise funds for us. You don’t have to ‘go to town’ with baking – we’re not all Devon’s answer to Mary Berry – and there are many ways to make your coffee morning a success.

“For example, you could ask your friends to bake some cakes and bring them, or even buy them – there’s no shame in that! You could also have a bric-a-brac stall, hold a raffle with a small prize, or play ‘Guess the Number of Beans in the Jar’ – these are great ways to boost your fundraising total.

A month of Hospiscare Coffee Mornings starts this week and one keen supporter has offered some insights into what’s involved in hosting.

Exeter-based police officer Lorraine Addicott first tells us why she became involved.

“I saw an advert for the Hospiscare Coffee Morning event in a local newspaper about two years ago. A very close friend had been cared for by the Exeter hospice, so I decided that I’d hold a coffee morning and raise funds so that others could have the same excellent care she’d had.”

That first coffee morning proved a great success, so Lorraine held a second one last year, raising almost £900. She is now making preparations for a third one, which she is planning to hold in three weeks’ time. For Lorraine, everything hinges on good organisation, as she explains:

“Although it’s quite a lot of work I really enjoy organising it. Being organised – which I consider I am – helps so much, especially when you have 70 to 80 people coming along! Because of the numbers I hold the event in the garden, and I’m lucky to be able to borrow items from my Mum’s village hall – so everything from tables to tea urns and mugs.

“I text my friends and family as soon as I have a date so that they can make a note of it. Then I send them a reminder about a month beforehand. I print notes and pop them through neighbours’ letterboxes asking them to come along for a cuppa, some cake and a chat in exchange for a donation. I don’t charge an entrance fee because I think you raise more with a bucket for donations.”

Lorraine’s family, friends and neighbours willingly help with the event. Her parents provide tea bags and other supplies and although she makes most of the cakes and quiches herself, other people always contribute their bakes too. On the day, her band of loyal helpers are on hand to organise parking as well as fetch and carry, wash mugs and keep the boiler topped up.

Lorraine, who lives near Broadclyst, is full of praise for the generosity of local people and businesses. “The Greendale Farm shop happily agreed to supply the six dozen eggs I need for baking when I cheekily asked them!” she said.

“People have given some lovely raffle prizes and I’ve also approached a couple of pub-restaurants who have kindly donated. In fact, we’re having not one but two draws this year because my Mum has made a beautiful cot quilt to raffle.

“I’ve found raffles an excellent way to raise money – perhaps it’s because I always give children the task of selling the draw tickets! After all, who has the heart to say no to a child?

“Local produce is a good money-spinner, and this year I’ve made some jam to sell. Last year, a neighbour’s children picked apples for us to sell. They were happy to donate to the cause because their Gran had been in the care of Hospiscare.

“All this hard work results in a lovely, sociable morning. It’s been so popular that the Hospiscare Coffee Morning seems to have become an annual event in the hamlet where I live! Sadly, my friend isn’t here to enjoy it with us, but I’m sure she would be cheering us on.”

It’s not too late to sign up to host your own Hospiscare Coffee Morning – whether it’s a small get together of friends and family, or sharing cake with your colleagues! Click on the link below to register for your free Hospiscare Coffee Morning pack, or call 01392 688020 for more details.
