This course is for Registered Nurses working in Residential Homes, Nursing Homes or other community settings who wish to take on the extended role of verification of expected death. It is an evidence-based, clinical course which will ensure that participants have the knowledge and competencies necessary to correctly verify death.

Course Outline:

  • Legal and ethical issues
  • Accountability and professional responsibility
  • Physiological signs of death
  • Examination necessary to confirm death has occurred
  • Documentation
  • Role of the Coroner and when referral is necessary
  • Role of the Funeral Director
  • Organ donation

As well as taking part in small group work, activities and discussions, learners will be expected to demonstrate their competency in carrying out the clinical observations necessary to verify death
