This workshop offers the opportunity to gain theoretical and practical knowledge of the use of syringe drivers in the palliative care context – in accordance with localPolicies.

There will be an opportunity to practice skills required to use commonly used syringe drivers.

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Identify the clinical indications for using a syringe driver.
  • Assemble and set up a subcutaneous 24hr syringe driver correctly.
  • Discuss the general principles to observe when caring for a patient with a syringe driver in  situ.
  •  Identify the drugs and dose ranges most routinely used in a syringe driver
  • Identify professional responsibility and accountability when caring for someone with    syringe driver
  • Recognise the common problems arising with using a syringe driver.

Target audience 

Qualified health care staff engaged in patient care.
