24-hour expert care

If a patient has difficult symptoms they can be admitted to our 12-bed hospice in Exeter for round-the-clock nursing and medical care.

Patients may be admitted for pain and symptom control before returning home or to another place of choice, or they may be admitted for care during the last few days of their lives.

Referrals are made by a GP, hospital, or Hospiscare nurse. The average length of stay is ten days, and about 50% of patients are discharged home or into other care.

Hospiscare’s values apply here, too

The hospice in-patient unit is very different from a hospital ward. Our main aim is to maximize the quality of life for each patient and to maintain their comfort and dignity.

To achieve this, we have a high number of nurses to patients, so that they have time to listen and explain treatments to patients and their families.

Our consultant-led medical team is especially skilled in end-of-life care and in the control of symptoms such as nausea and pain.

Home comfort

We do our best to provide home comforts, with access to our gardens, freshly prepared meals, and individual televisions or radios.

We recognise that people will have emotional, spiritual and social needs as well as physical ones, and we have the range of expertise to respond to all of these needs.

Patients and families may meet our chaplain, care managers, complementary therapists, or volunteers.
