More than 300 to swim for Hospiscare

Big splash for third open-water challenge

More than 300 swimmers are to take part in Hospiscare’s one-mile open water challenge this Saturday ( Sept 24th) at Roadford Lake near Okehampton.

The event in its third year is the only lake-based swim of its kind in the region and will once more see novice open-water swimmers side by side with experienced tri-athletes.

Challengers will depart at ten-minute intervals - divided into groups by the colour of their swimming hats! The elite swimmers will go first with the one-mile course marked by buoys with 45 volunteer kayal marshals to keep everyone safe and on track.

Swimmers - fundraising to help patients and their families across Exeter, mid and East Devon - come from far and wide and include leading Cornish artist Jo Downs who is taking on the challenge to celebrate her 40th birthday.

“This swim has become a key event for us,” said Hospiscare spokeswoman Teresa Driscoll. “I swam myself last year and was bowled over by the atmosphere and the organisation. For anyone who loves the water, it is a truly exhilarating sight to see so many people doing something special for a great cause.”

The Hospiscare event is sponsored by Exeter Family Friendly, Landmark Information Group, Thrifty Car Rental and South West Water.

Compere to help entertain supporters and cheer on the swimmers is Exeter FM’s Matt Young.
