Freemasons from Tiverton raised more than £2,500 for Hospiscare, the local charity which supports people with terminal illness and their families. The funds will go directly towards helping to run the charity’s day care centre at Fig Tree Lodge, Canal Hill, which opened last year. The nurse-led centre provides a range of services and activities for patients including crafts, complementary therapy and hairdressing.
The funds were raised by the local Tiverton Freemason lodges, as well as a donation from the organisation’s county-wide charitable fund which was set up specifically to support local charities.
Alison Palfrey, Director of Fundraising for Hospiscare, said: “We are very grateful for this generous donation for Hospiscare in Tiverton. The day centre has become a key part of how we support patients in the area and we need ongoing support to continue making a difference. Many people do not realise that our services rely on donations and the generous support of our volunteers and fundraisers, so donations such as this are vital.”
Hospiscare provides dedicated medical and practical care and support for local people with terminal illness, and their families. It has a team of clinical nurse specialists based at Tiverton who visit patients in their own homes and provide practical advice, care and compassion when people need it most. Last year Hospiscare nurses cared for 200 patients in the Tiverton area. The day care centre opened in April last year following the closure of the Marie Curie day service, and a dedicated support group, the Tiverton and District Friends of Hospiscare, was launched last year. There is also a Hospiscare Shop in Bampton Street
