Eighty-ton gift for Pine Lodge

Next step for dream garden

Eight lorry loads of topsoil are the latest gift to help complete Hospiscare’s new Pine Lodge centre in Tiverton.

The 80-ton present from Midas Commercial Developments will mean a key step in transforming the grounds of Pine Lodge into a dream garden.

The soil is due to be delivered by Midas trucks and drivers on Tuesday September 27th and Hospiscare’s estates manager Wayne Gale has the challenge of organising a team to spread it.

“That’s a lot of soil,” laughed Wayne, “But it’s exactly what we need so we are incredibly grateful to Midas Commercial Developments. It will be a real team effort on the day.”

The soil means the garden will soon be ready for the first stage of planting to realise the design by Michael Hickson, the former head gardener of Knightshayes Garden Trust. His vision for the two-acre semi-wooded site is a high impact but low maintenance garden which can be managed by volunteers. The design includes a gazebo and scented garden as well as boundary shrubs which will attract wildlife.

Pine Lodge was bought with a Department of Health grant and transformed into a vibrant hospice centre thanks to a community effort to raise £250,000. The centre, already being enjoyed by patients, will be officially opened by HRH the Countess of Wessex on October 17th.
