Cathedral Tree of Light service

Remembering loved-ones

More than a thousand people attended Hospiscare’s Tree of Light service at Exeter Cathedral on Sunday, December 4th.

The annual service to remember loved ones included carols and prayers plus readings by Hospiscare staff and volunteers.

The service was conducted by Canon Carl Turner together with the charity’s chaplain David Walford and featured the Inspirational Choir and Escape Dance Company from Exeter College and the St Peter’s Singers.

On display was a Book of Memories in which the names of more than 1,700 people are recorded. The service concluded with the lighting of the tree outside the Cathedral with a light then shining out over the festive season for each of the loved ones remembered.

Hospiscare’s Chief executive Glynis Atherton said: “ Every year I am touched and inspired by this beautiful service. It is a real privilege to stand alongside so many friends and supporters , especially as our charity prepares for our 30th anniversary year in 2012.”

Hospiscare chaplain David Walford added: “This service is a very important part of Hospiscare’s ongoing care for those who have been bereaved. The setting – Exeter Cathedral – is so beautiful and uplifting. The readings are chosen very carefully to bring comfort and support and the inclusion of young people adds a vital element – filling the cathedral with life and hope.”
