Ideal conditions made for a stunning open water challenge for Hospiscare’s third one-mile swim.
More than 260 swimmers from across the south west took part in the event at Roadford Lake near Okehampton on Saturday (Sept 24th) with volunteer kayakers marking out the one-mile route.
Fastest male swimmer was 18-year-old Matt Edwards from Tavistock who completed the mile in just 20 minutes 29 seconds while Yasmin Bennellick from Tiverton took the ladies trophy with a time of 24 minutes 9 seconds.
Swimmers set off at ten- minute intervals with families and supporters entertained by compere Matt Young from Exeter FM.
“The weather was just perfect – dry and mild which was ideal for the swimmers,” said Hospiscare spokeswoman Teresa Driscoll. “There was a terrific atmosphere and all the money raised will be used now to support patients and their families across Exeter, mid and east Devon.”
The event – the third at Roadford for Hospiscare – was sponsored by a range of local companies including Exeter Family Friendly, Landmark Information Group, Thrifty Car Rental and South West Water.
“There is a wonderful buzz at this event and it was a pleasure to be involved,” said Matt Young.
