Our trustees

The trustees of Hospiscare ensure that donated funds are used wisely to meet the objectives of the charity.

The Hospiscare Board meets regularly during the year to consider, determine and review strategies and policies, and to receive reports from the senior management team.

Patrick Beasley, Chairman

>Patrick was a Consultant ENT Surgeon in Exeter for 30 years. He joined the Board of this Trust as Medical Director for five years with particular responsibility for clinical governance, audit and risk management. He undertook pilot work with the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA).

He was Regional Adviser to the Royal College of Surgeons and Hon Secretary of the British Association of Otolaryngologists.

After leaving the NHS he joined the Board of Mercury Health, an Independent Sector Company providing services for NHS patients, as Group Medical Director. During this time he worked closely with PCT Commissioners and the Department of Health.


Peter Day, Vice Chairman

>Following a career with a global banking and financial services organisation, Peter retired from a general management position in 1999. He has considerable business experience in the fields of strategic planning, sales and marketing direction, human resource management, risk management and budgetary control.

Appointed a trustee in 2003, since which time he has held particular responsibilities for finance, corporate governance and human resource matters.


Ken Lancaster C. Eng.

>Ken is a retired Chartered Civil Engineer who spent 40 years in the construction facilities management industry, working in both the private and public sectors.

After retiring he became a Samaritan, and joined Hospiscare as a volunteer in 2001. As well as being a trustee Ken still volunteers at the Exeter day centre, visits patients at home and leads the Tiverton and District Friends of Hospiscare.


Nick Agg-Manning

>Nick runs a sucessful Devon-based business, and has previously served as a City Councillor in Bath. Born and brought up in Africa, Nick also served in the Rhodesian Light Infantry.


Ruth Hawker

> Professor Ruth Hawker OBE has worked in the NHS in Devon and Cornwall for fifty years, having started her nursing career in 1956. She was awarded her OBE for services to nurse education in 1994 and became Emeritus Professor of Health Studies at the University of Plymouth in 1995. Ruth was Pro Chancellor of the University of Exeter from 2000 - 2007.


Andrew Smith

>Andrew is Relationship Director at Lloyds TSB Corporate in Exeter, so is responsible for managing the bank's portfolio of large corporate customers in the central south west, with turnovers ranging from £15m to £300m.


Mavis Seeley

>Mavis Seeley is now retired from a nursing career spanning 47 years. Having worked in intensive care and Accident and Emergency, Mavis moved into Occupational Health and Education. Whilst Principal Lecturer in OH at the Royal College of Nursing, Mavis travelled extensively and taught several courses in Zambia.

Achieving her MA in Education, Mavis moved into consultancy and as MD of Gordon Associates (OH) Ltd, developed a successful team of professionals working in an international environment.


Elizabeth Neil

>Elizabeth chairs the Hospiscare Shops Board and the President's Committee, and is a member of the Golf Committee.


Susan Sutherland

>Sue is a qualified nurse and midwife with post graduate qualifications in human resource management. She has spent 40 years in the health service of which over 20 have been at Board level in various director posts. For the 10 years prior to retirement she was an NHS Chief Executive and was awarded the OBE in 2005 for services to organ donation and transplantation.

Sue is currently the Chairman of the Board of Governors of Bournemouth University


Roger Cawse

>Roger spent 42 years in the Financial Services industry working at a major bank for the first 25 of them, with the final 5 years at its Head Office in London to where he commuted on a daily basis from his home in south Devon. After leaving the bank, he became Chief Executive Officer of a private medical insurer retiring in 2008.

He has held main board appointments at a housing association ranked in the top ten in the U.K. and a London based business specialising in providing life and savings products to an affinity group of workers.
